Changing Societies

This workshop is suitable for pupils learning about the changes from hunter-gatherer societies in the Stone Age to farming communities in the Celtic Iron Age. The workshop takes place at your school.

 

Learning Outcome

      To learn about changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age

 

Outline

Introduction.
      
Setting the scene and looking at archaeological objects.

Split the class into two groups.
     
Group 1 will be experiencing what life was like as a Hunter- Gatherer, 
      Group 2 will be experiencing what life was like as an Iron-Age Farmer.

Group 1 will find out about wild food and examine the evidence left behind by hunter-gatherers. They will also build a shelter.

Group 2 will make bread, weave and make pottery.

 

The groups will come back together to swap information and build a wattle and daub wall.

Changing Societies workshop

Clothing

The workshop takes place outside. Children should wear sturdy footwear and warm and waterproof clothing on chilly days and have sun protection on sunny days.

 

Staff ratios

The class teacher must be present for the whole session.

 

Photography

We are very happy for our staff to be photographed working with your pupils. Where consent is available we would be grateful for copies of digital photos we can use for promotion and publicity.

 

Health and safety

A risk assessment has been prepared to assist you in your risk assessment.

If your group has specific issues, such as special educational needs, learning or physical disabilities please raise these when booking so that we can tailor the session accordingly.
